Agiofarago Gorge

The Agiofarago gorge is located on the south coast of Heraklion, near the seaside village of Kali Limenes. The entrance to Agiofarago can be found past the monastery of Odigitria through a path. The gorge ends at a beautiful beach on the south coast. The walk through the gorge is quite easy, through high rock walls and caves of all sizes in which hermits used to live from the Byzantine period until the end of the 19th century.
Right before the exit to the beach, is the church of St. Anthony. The apostle Paul landed on this bay and started his teaching here. Since then it became a holy place, hence the name of the gorge which means “the gorge of the Saints.”
