Komitades Village
Komitades is a village at the end of Imbros gorge. It is located 5 klm away from Chora Sfakion on an altitude of 200m and the view to the Libyan sea is stunning. The village was destroyed many times by pirates. During one of these attacks the villagers prayed to Saint George for help and when the village was saved they built a church to his honour decorated with exquisite frescoes painted be the famous painter I.Pagomenos.
Around the village many caves can be found. The chapel of Saint Paul is built in one of those caves. The old monastery of Panagia Thimiani is on the south of the village, dedicated to the Holy Mother of God. It took its name from a thyme bush that the icon of the Holly Mother was found underneath.
