Lato

Lato was one of the most important Doric city-states in Crete, built between two hills on the foot of the Lassithi mountains. In the 2nd century BC its citizens abandoned it and moved to the harbour of the city which was called Lato pros Kamara (today Agios Nikolaos), which was flourishing at the time. Lato was the birthplace of Nearchos, the admiral of Alexander the Great.
The most important monuments of the site are: the agora (market place), the prytaneion with the small temple, the altar and the theatre from the classical period.
