Akrotiri
The peninsula of Akrotiri rises on the northeast of Chania and acts as a barrier that protects Souda bay from heavy north winds. On the north coast of the peninsula, sandy beaches provide an excellent swimming and relaxing possibilities, and many tavernas and shops can cover the visitors’ needs. Important monasteries such as Agia Triada and Gouverneto are there and are worth visiting.
The tomb of Eleftherios Venizelos is on a hill surrounded by a small forest offering great views of Chania city. Many visitors come to Crete to see its rare wild flowers and many different kinds of them can be found from January to April in Akrotiri. The international airport of Chania is on the east part of the peninsula.
