Lassithi Plateau
Lassithi plateau is surrounded by the peaks of Dikti Mountains at an altitude of more than 800m. It is permanently inhabited throughout the year and is one of the most beautiful areas in Crete. It's a green fertile valley full of potato, vegetables, and fruit cultivations as well as almond trees.
There used to be more than 7000 white-sailed wind mills, which were used for the area's watering and added to the scenery’s beauty but they are currently abandoned. However, nowadays there is an increasing interest to restore the windmills, so that the visitor can again get the picture of the Lassithi Plateau as it once was.
Dicti cave, the birthplace of Zeus, is located above the plateau. 16 villages are scattered around Lassithi with Tzermiadon being the biggest of all and the capital of the province.
