White Mountains

White Mountains

The largest of the three mountain ranges in Crete are the White Mountains, called like that because their 50 peaks are covered in snow nearly all year round. The White mountains rise just behind the city of Chania and drop to the Libyan sea on the south of the island. The highest peak is Pachnes at 2450m. and the flora and fauna in this mountain range are unique and some species are protected by international agreement.

Omalos plateau is surrounded by the White Mountains and more than 20 gorges and canyons can be found here. Samaria gorge is the most famous one and some smaller but not less impressive will be Agia Irini, Aradena and Imbros gorge.
