Margarites village

Margarites is a small traditional village 31klm southeast of Rethymno. The legend has it that the village was founded by Queen Margaret and that’s how it took its name. It is a colourful village with remains from older periods retaining certain aspects of traditional Cretan architecture.

The 350 inhabitants are mostly farmers and stockbreeders but the ancient art of pottery flourishes in the small Cretan village. It is an important centre of ceramic art. Everything here is handmade and the artists use techniques that date thousand of years back. All the workshops have a classical potter’s wheel and ovens used for firing the pottery items. The most famous earthenware made in Margarites is the large jars which were also produced in Minoan times.
